After years of efforts, tan tieniu led the team to overcome the technical difficulties one by one from the aspects of iris collection, recognition and living detection, breaking the monopoly of iris recognition technology in the world, changing from passive to active, and realizing the leapfrog development of domestic iris recognition from scratch and from basic research to practical application.

“ now, in terms of iris image acquisition, we can achieve image acquisition from one eye to two eyes, image acquisition from near and far, and image acquisition from fixed to moving state," tan said.

According to the introduction, the CASIA iris image database independently built by tan tieniu research team is the most widely used iris image database in the world, with more than 20,000 research teams from 180 countries applying for use. The team has published more than 120 papers in international journals, including six long articles in the IEEE journal of pattern analysis and machine intelligence (PAMI).

"Now that our technology can be licensed and used abroad, many countries have applied to use our iris database, and we have the initiative," said tan. This fully shows that only by mastering the key core technologies can we master the initiative of scientific and technological development.

Iris recognition technology has a broad application prospect both at the national security level and at the industry level

As the iris recognition technology continues to progress, its industrial application continues to advance.

Iris recognition has been widely used in India, Mexico, the united Arab emirates and other countries, especially in high-security situations such as homeland security, counter-terrorism and riot, and social security.

The global Market for biometric technology will grow from $11.24 billion in 2015 to $23.3 billion in 2020, according to estimates by Transparency Market Research, a consultancy. Iris recognition technology ranks second, and the market is expected to grow at an annual rate of 28.6 percent to reach $2.45 billion by 2020.

Tan believes that iris recognition is the future of identity authentication development direction. " there is a very broad application prospect both at the national security requirements level and at the industry level of application requirements."

At the same time, tan also admitted that iris recognition technology needs to be improved in terms of user experience and cost price if it is to be applied in more fields and become a recognition technology used habitually by the general public.

"For example, many iris recognition devices on the market are close iris recognition products, which require users to actively cooperate with the device to complete image collection. Compared to face recognition, the user experience is poor," tan said. At the same time, the cost of research and production needs to be further reduced.
